Principles of Community-based Research

SHS investigators are committed to the doctrine that community-based research requires full partnership and ongoing face-to-face discussions with local communities. We partner with tribal communities to identify health needs and priority areas of importance to the communities, and then work to develop approaches to address those identified needs.Through community engagement, we aim to: (1) promote cardiovascular health and awareness of risk factors and related conditions in the SHS communities; (2) foster partnerships with the community representatives and stakeholders, including tribal leaders; (3) conduct activities to raise awareness and encourage engagement of SHS participants in opportunities regarding ongoing follow-up activities and exam participation; and (4) offer formal and/or informal training opportunities for researchers and health professionals in the SHS communities.
